3 Desperate Nigerians found sitting on ship's rudder survived an 11-day voyage from Nigeria to Spain😱

The Spanish Coast Guard has recently rescued three people who were stowed away on the rudder of a ship that arrived in the Canary Islands from Nigeria. The migrants were taken into the port and attended to by health services.

The Canary Islands, an archipelago off the coast of West Africa, is a popular gateway for African migrants attempting to reach Europe. In 2020, more than 20,000 migrants crossed from the West African coastline to the Canary Islands, according to the Red Cross. Sadly, more than 1,100 of those people died at sea.

In the same year, four Nigerian stowaways survived 10 days at sea before they were found hidden in a compartment above the rudder of a Norwegian oil tanker that had traveled from Lagos to Las Palmas. Also, a 14-year-old Nigerian told the Spanish newspaper El Pais that he hid for 15 days in a room atop the rudder of a cargo ship carrying fuel, as it journeyed from Lagos to the Canary Islands.

The Spanish Coast Guard has done an incredible job rescuing these three people, who were stowed away on the rudder of a ship that arrived in the Canary Islands from Nigeria.

But why are so many people from West Africa risking their lives to make this dangerous journey?Poverty, violent conflict, and the quest for job opportunities continue to fuel migration out of West Africa, the Red Cross says. In many cases, people are desperate and have few other options. It’s a heartbreaking situation, and one that needs to be addressed.

The Spanish Coast Guard is doing its best to save lives, but Governments need to be done to help people in West Africa. They need to find ways to provide economic opportunities and stability in these countries, so people don’t have to risk their lives to find a better life.
