The rate of single men in the US looking for dates has declined – “strong independent woman” agenda finally win?

Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggest major problems with regard to the mental health of adolescents, with surges in depression and suicidal ideation, especially true for young girls. However, this week a cause for further worry emerged with regards to young men. A report from The Hill caught attention, noting that most young men are single, while most young women are not. According to a Pew Research Center study conducted in 2020, 30% of U.S. adults are neither married nor living with a partner, and nearly half of all young adults are single. Among these, 34% are women and 63% are men.

The Pew study revealed that since 2019, the share of single men who say they’re looking for dates or relationships has declined from 61% to 50%. Furthermore, 28% of men ages 18 to 30 reported they had no sex in the past year, compared to 18% of women of the same age. The Hill report suggested that men in their twenties are more likely than women in their twenties to be romantically uninvolved, sexually dormant, friendless and lonely. This phenomenon is part of an epidemic of declining marriage, sexuality and relationships that afflicts young America.

The causes behind this trend are many, including a reliance on social media and online porn. Additionally, more young women are hooking up with each other or dating and marrying slightly older men, and heterosexual women are becoming more choosy. Further troubling statistics from the Pew study include that in 2018, only 16% of men age 18 to 30 reported they were living with a partner, which is a significant decrease from 33% in 2000.

These statistics are concerning, as they suggest that young men are increasingly finding themselves in a lonely and isolated state. It is important that further research is conducted to gain a better understanding of the causes and effects of this trend, and to develop effective strategies to address it.
