Trump is returning to Facebook and Instagram after 2 year ban

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced that it will be restoring the social media accounts of Donald Trump. This is a politically consequential decision, as Trump was removed from both platforms in the days following the Capitol attack in January 2021. Facebook had previously stated that allowing Trump to remain on the platform posed a risk to public safety. After reassessing the situation, they have decided that this risk is no longer present. Trump will be able to access his accounts again in the coming weeks.

It is important to note that Trump has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on targeted Facebook advertising in past campaigns, and this will likely be the case in 2024 as well. According to an exclusive interview with the President of Global Affairs for Meta, Nick Clegg, Trump will be subject to the same rules as any other user, and if he violates these rules he can be banned again. However, Facebook will not be monitoring Trump’s posts. This is a significant decision, as it has been questioned whether or not Facebook should be responsible for monitoring Trump’s posts.
